UPRIGHT LEARNING QUEST

Let’s take it one step at a time.

A guide for teachers using the site for the first time. You do not need to know technical words.

Open the learning site

Your first visit

  1. Open the learning site

In your browser’s address bar at the very top, type uprightlearningquest.com and press Enter.

What happens next: You will see student sign-in, or your learning dashboard if you are already signed in.

Helpful tip: A browser is the app you use for websites, such as Chrome, Safari, or Edge.

  2. Choose teacher sign-in

On the student sign-in page, select Teacher / owner sign-in. Enter your owner email and owner access key, then use the sign-in button.

What happens next: The teacher’s learning site opens. Keep your owner access key private.

Helpful tip: The owner access key is different from a student code. If you do not have it, ask the person who set up your school’s account.

  3. Pick Math or ELA

At the top of the learning site, select Math or ELA. ELA means reading and language arts.

What happens next: The chosen subject opens. Math and ELA have separate learning paths and student codes.

Helpful tip: A tab is a labeled button that switches between sections. You can open Tutorial in either subject.

  4. Explore before teaching

Open this tutorial’s Math or ELA section. Follow the teacher preview steps to try an activity yourself.

What happens next: Teacher preview lets you look at a lesson without changing a student’s scores.

Helpful tip: For now, use Preview instruction. Whole-class presentation controls affect the class.

  5. Help a student sign in

Use the Student sign-in section of this guide. Give each student the code for the subject they will use.

What happens next: Each student opens their own learning path.

Helpful tip: Never give a student your owner access key. If no student code has been assigned yet, return to the teacher dashboard.

  6. Find help again

Select Tutorial whenever you need these steps. Use Next step and Back to move through a guide. Select Close to return to your page.

What happens next: The guide closes and your page remains open.

Helpful tip: The tutorial does not start, pause, or reset a lesson. Pause any playing lesson before reading the guide if you need quiet.

Teach a Math lesson

  1. Open Math

Close this guide and select Math at the top of the learning site. Open Tutorial again when you need the next step.

What happens next: You will see the Math learning area.

Helpful tip: If you see a student sign-in page, use Teacher / owner sign-in first.

  2. Choose a lesson to preview

On the teacher dashboard, find Preview instruction. Choose a unit from its drop-down list, then select Preview skill lesson.

What happens next: A teacher preview of that lesson opens. It does not change student scores.

Helpful tip: A drop-down list opens when you click its small arrow. Choose the unit you want from the list.

  3. Move at your own pace

Select Next teaching step to move forward. Use Back to return to an earlier step. Use Restart this step to repeat the step shown.

What happens next: You can review an explanation before teaching it.

Helpful tip: To begin the preview again from the start, return to Teacher dashboard and open Preview skill lesson again.

  4. Play or pause instruction

Use Play lesson continuously if you want the lesson to move through its teaching steps. Select Pause when you want it to stop.

What happens next: You can discuss the explanation with your class, then continue when ready.

Helpful tip: Use Tutor voice on / off to control narration. Check your device volume if you cannot hear Heart.

  5. Answer a class question

Return to Teacher dashboard. In Teacher Question Box, enter the question in Student question. You may add your own explanation in Optional teacher-provided answer or worked example. Then select Ask the tutor for the student.

What happens next: You can review the explanation with your class.

Helpful tip: Read the answer yourself before presenting it. If audio is unavailable, use the written explanation.

  6. Teach the whole class

When you are ready for your class, use Start whole-class instruction. Use Question time — student audio paused for a discussion. Use End presentation when finished.

What happens next: These controls change the class presentation state.

Helpful tip: Release independent work becomes available after the selected unit has been taught. Teacher preview is the place to practice without changing the class state.

  7. Check learning progress

On the teacher dashboard, look at Growth across units and Submitted digital assignments. Use Review question responses when you want to see answers.

What happens next: You can decide what to teach or review next.

Helpful tip: If you edit an individual learning plan, check that the correct learner is selected before choosing Save individual plan.

Teach a reading and ELA lesson

  1. Open ELA

Close this guide and select ELA at the top of the learning site. ELA means reading and language arts.

What happens next: You will see the reading area. The adventure map is headed Small steps. Extraordinary discoveries.

Helpful tip: Open Tutorial again in ELA whenever you need the next step.

  2. Preview a skill lesson

On the teacher dashboard, find Preview instruction. Choose a unit from the drop-down list, then select Preview skill lesson.

What happens next: A teacher preview opens without changing student scores.

Helpful tip: Use the unit’s title to choose the skill you want to practice.

  3. Listen to a word

When a word activity offers Hear Heart model this word, select it once and let the audio finish. Use Explore the word list if you want another word.

What happens next: Heart models the word while you follow the letters on screen.

Helpful tip: If playback overlaps or sounds wrong, pause and replay once. You can model the word yourself and report the word and lesson to the site owner.

  4. Move through the teaching steps

Use Next teaching step to continue, Back to revisit a step, and Restart this step to repeat the current explanation.

What happens next: You can teach at the pace your class needs.

Helpful tip: To begin the preview from its first step, return to Teacher dashboard and open the preview again.

  5. Try reading and writing

Return to Teacher dashboard. Select Preview connected reading to review a reading activity, or Preview sentence workshop to review a writing activity.

What happens next: You can see the activity before asking students to use it.

Helpful tip: Stay in teacher preview when you are practicing. Preview does not change student scores.

  6. Lead the class

Use Start whole-class instruction when ready. Use Question time — student audio paused for discussion. Use End presentation to finish.

What happens next: The class follows the presentation state you choose.

Helpful tip: These controls affect the class. Release independent work is available after the unit has been taught.

  7. Review student work

On the teacher dashboard, open Submitted digital assignments and Review question responses. Use Save writing review after reviewing a writing response.

What happens next: You can see what students understand and plan the next lesson.

Helpful tip: Check the selected student before saving an individual review or learning plan.

Help a student get started

  1. Get the right code

Give the student their assigned student code from the teacher dashboard. Check whether the code is for Math or ELA.

What happens next: The student has the code for their own learning path.

Helpful tip: Math and ELA use separate codes. Students must not use the owner access key.

  2. Open student sign-in

On the student’s device, type uprightlearningquest.com/students in the browser’s address bar and press Enter.

What happens next: The page says Your next adventure starts here.

Helpful tip: If you are testing on a teacher’s device, use a separate private browser window so your teacher session stays separate.

  3. Choose the subject

Under My subject, choose Math or ELA. Type the assigned code in My student code.

What happens next: The selected subject and code are ready to use.

Helpful tip: Check the letters and numbers carefully. If sign-in fails, first check that the code matches the chosen subject.

  4. Open the learning path

If you assigned a school email, enter that exact email. Otherwise leave the optional email box empty. Select Open my learning path.

What happens next: The student’s learning path opens.

Helpful tip: A code comes from the teacher. The sign-in page does not create one.

  5. Continue the lesson

Use Resume my saved lesson when it is shown, or Continue my adventure to begin. Follow the instructions and use the help button when needed.

What happens next: Progress saves to that student’s learning path.

Helpful tip: For a test, use a test student’s code rather than a real student’s code.

  6. Finish on a shared device

When finished, return to the student sign-in page and select Sign out of both subjects before the next student uses the device.

What happens next: The next student can enter their own code.

Helpful tip: Keep student codes private. Ask the teacher for help if a student opens the wrong learning path.
